Things to do at the Atlas Coal Mine
Join our fun and fascinating guides to tour the last wooden tipple in Canada, explore the 210 foot underground conveyor tunnel, hike up the newly restored Blacksmith Shop and ride on the 1936 Mancha mine locomotive.

If you arrive after a tour has already started, the next one will be starting soon. In the meantime, enjoy the exhibits and the documentary Thunder in the Valley, or simply soak up the ambiance of the most complete coal mining museum in Canada. While you're exploring, be sure to visit the restored mine offices, wash house, battery shack, and the original miner's shack - built of straw, mud, and manure.

Halloween at the Haunted Atlas Coal Mine Event
Be sure to check the Drumheller Calendar of Events before you arrive because the Atlas Coal Mine hosts many great events throughout the year. It's most famous and frightening being the Haunted Atlas Coal Mine, which takes place every year, right before Halloween ().
Atlas Coal Mine Admission Rates

Tunnel Tour: $12/person or $36/family
*site admission and GST included in tour price.

Put on a miner's lamp and go up the underground! This unique underground tour ascends the 210 foot long inclined conveyor tunnel. Betweeen 1936 and 1979, 5 million tons of coal descended this one of a kind transportation tunnel. Follow in the footsteps of the miners, in one end and out the other. Emerge high in the scenic badlands, and encounter the mine blacksmith shop and the ruins of the Atlas #3 portal .

Please note: The Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site has set policies in place to ensure the comfort, safety, and quality experience for all program participants. To aheive this, participants must wear suitable footwear for the tunnel tour. Suitable footwear includes running shoes, hiking boots, or sturdy sandals with a back strap. There are no flip flops or crocs permitted. Participants are also encouraged to bring water, wear hats, and use sunscreen. The terrain is steep, uneven and rough.

Tipple Tour: $9/person or $27/family

Climb the last wooden tipple in Canada, and see the inner workings of this nationally designated historic icon. Hear stories of the men and the boys who worked in the Drumheller mines. This tour is suitable for all ages, but moderately strenuous. People who are troubled by heights or ascending a ramp will find this tour challenging.

Offered at scheduled times throughout the day. The tour does not include the underground tunnel.

Mine Train Tour
$9/person or $27/Family
Climb into a coal car and tour the surface plant and spectacular badlands scenery. This new above ground tour expands upon our popular coal car ride, and will be popular wth families and train lovers of all ages. This narrow gauge "mantrip" is pulled by an antique Mancha Mule battery locomotive, formerly used in underground mines.
Weather dependant. Due to authentic equipment, visitors with mobility issues may find loading into cars difficult.

Site Admission: $7/person or $21/family

Wander through the original historic surface plant buildings at your own pace. See the wash house, lamp house, supply house, mine office, miner's shack and interpretive building. Walk the footsteps of the miners around the tipple trail and read the interpretive panels.

GHOST WALK
$ 9/person or $27/family. Offered 7pm summer evenings; 1 hour
Put your walking shoes on and explore the dark side of coal mining. Learn about accidents, brawls, and the shady side of mine towns. Hear about mysterious sightings at the Atlas Coal Mine. The mine closed 20 years ago, but not all of the miners have checked out.
Mature content, Parental discretion is advised. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

This is an outdoor attraction so dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and if you’re tall, be prepared to duck because miners were pretty short in the old days. There are washrooms on site, picnic tables and the Miner's Lamp Gift Shop. We do not have cafeteria services, but we do offer light snacks, water and beverages in the gift shop. Bug spray is an asset in the summer, as are sunhats.
