Synopsis;
Winter, 1936. Alberta is in the grip of the Depression.
It’s new Social Credit government, and leader “Bible Bill” Aberhart, has been elected on a promise to kick economic recovery through a $25 a month to every citizen program. Tom Lawson (Ryan Northcott – Mystery, Alaska), a rising political star in Aberhart’s government, is blackmailed by his under-age girlfriend. In order to avoid a political scandal, he returns home to Delburne attempting to gain the financial help of his brother, Dan (Lonni Olson – Black Summer, Fargo).
Dan faces problems of his own at home. His wife Grace (Rae Farrer) is unable to conceive a child she so desperately wants so they can start a family. The couple also act as caretakers to Grace’s ill-stricken sister Cecile (Heather Pattengale), who is the true love of Dan’s life. When Dan confesses Grace’s desire to have a child Tom, he suggests they consider using a surrogate, which Dan takes to mean Cecile, creating further potential for family scandal.
All this while the Delburne Miners hockey team, and star goalie, the third brother Huck (Christopher Duthie), are on their way to their first championship season in years and Cecile is the hockey team’s lucky charm.
Loyalty, greed, and desperation binds the family, then tears them apart. In family, all debts collect interest.
The film also features well-known Canadian talent, Nathaniel Arcand, who after this film secured a role in Martin Scorses’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
